Black/ World History in Tooting Market

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

The last weekend of black history month

Last weekend was the last weekend of black history month.

Black history is usually a time spent1 acknowledging the Melanated African and Caribbean diaspora history of pioneers, inventors, and heroes such as Marcus Garvey a Jamaican political activist, journalist and so much more, who paved the way for this recent generation and generations yet to come.

Tooting celebrated black history with a cultural gathering of melanated business owners selling food, and craft/jewelry items, and a mini-concert.

Meet some of the businesses.

Meet Denise. The bread lady D2G!

Denise is the mother of twins. Denise Bakes and sells bread.

Denise told me her inspiration for turnimg her bread baking into a business came from her son. He is a fussy eater and only eats bread, to maintain his norishment Denise got into bread baking.

Denise also creates Pizza kits and provides them to the local community cenres and what bread she does not sell she donates to the food bank.

Denises has a variety of bread and I must say, I do not need any fillings to enjoy them, they are enjoyable just as they are, if I could make a quick getaway with the plain and herb sample basket, mark my words I would. The best part about Denises bread is that it is dairy and animal product free which makes it vegan-suitable!

Meet Maame's

The food smelt wonderful, the people were very polite and this food stall was very popular as the line just kept on growing!

Meet Skin of Love. Selling gorgeous smelling natural lavender products such as essential oils and more.

The birth of Skin of Love started 9 years ago and today 2022 it joins Tooting in its acknowledgment of black history.

Meet the locals

Today they came for the music, food and culture.

The gentleman on the right plays a mean game of chess, not that I am any good, but a mean game, nonetheless. It was a pleasure playing him.

The mini-concert

Throughout the day this concert was live and kept a large audience. Singing songs of old Jamacia such as the classic reggae tunes from artists such as Bob Marley.

This band was kicking, and the vocalist could really hit the high notes (amazing!). This was a lovely ending to the historic day for me.
