Welcoming Roliste Jerman to our IC Warrior community

About Roliste

I am Roliste and live in Northamptonshire with my husband and my three boys. We originally moved to get away from the buzzing and vibrant city that London is and relocate to a small village to enjoy a more relaxed life and give our children a different environment to thrive. I have worked for over 20 years as a civil servant but have always felt that I needed to be doing something different that impacts individuals' lives at a deeper level. I decided to join a national charity where I was a listening volunteer supporting people with mental health and emotional distress. Though I knew I was helping others, it still felt like that it wasn’t enough and after much soul-searching, I decided I needed to retrain to gain the knowledge required to effectively support people.

Experiences

My personal experience of a close family member experiencing mental illness, plus the difficulty I found in navigating the system demonstrated that there wasn’t enough support available, especially within the Ethnic community. The Black community particularly were very much left behind in term of seeking and getting the appropriate mental health support compared to others. This finding precipitated my decision to enrol on a (Bsc) Psychology with counselling degree course with the Open University and then on a 4-year journey to gain my Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling: An Integrative Approach with The Bedfordshire Centre for Therapeutic Studies (BCTS).

The Journey

It has been a tough few years juggling full-time work, family and studies and everything else in between, but the struggle was worth it. My favourite motto throughout this has been “Where there is a will, there is a way!” as at times it has been really challenging; physically and mentally. Keeping your goal in mind is important as it gives you the motivation and pushes to carry out one task at a time. It is important to always remember your WHY!

My WHY is to make counselling accessible to as many people as possible, particularly in communities where mental health and counselling still hold quite a lot of taboo and stigmatization.
